Bette Buna is a vertically integrated coffee company founded in 2020 by husband and wife Dawit and Hester. Their coffee journey began following the passing of Dawit’s grandfather, who farmed coffee with his wife, Emame, in Taferi Kela, Sidama for nearly a century.

Bette Buna operates farms across Sidama, Guji, Yirgacheffe and Bench Maji while collaborating with allied farmers in these regions. Their coffee is processed as a classic washed process, whereby initially imperfect cherries are removed by floating, followed by pulping and fermentation for 48–72 hours to remove mucilage. Finally, the seeds are soaked and dried on raised beds or two weeks to achieve optimal moisture content.

"This is the second year we are buying our Ethiopian 1829 from Bette Buna. It’s a great project focusing on social impact through equal opportunity employment, value creation for small producers and sustainable farm practices.”

Lukas Haertel, Coffee Quality and Sourcing Manager.

Origins.
Ethiopia.

Ethiopian coffee is known for its unique vibrancy and complexity created by the coming together of wild heirloom varieties picked by hundreds of farmers to create just one lot such as this.

Ethiopia boasts a diverse terroir, with various coffee-growing regions each offering a unique environment. These regions exhibit different altitudes, microclimates, and soil composition, all contributing to unique flavor profiles. Generally, coffee growing regions in Ethiopia falls within an elevation range of 1,200 to 2,400 MaSL. The high altitudes and varied microclimates provide ideal conditions for slow cherry ripening, which results in complex flavors and acidity. These coffees are celebrated for their intricate flavor profiles. These include floral, fruity, citrusy characteristics. These complex flavors are a direct result of the unique terroir and varietals.
