The Coffee.

The Gesha trees producing this coffee grow at an average elevation of 1,550 MaSL on the slopes of Volcán Barú National Park, a well-preserved biodiversity hotspot. The volcanic soil is fertile, deep, and well-draining. The estate benefits from an ideal balance of shade from native trees and ample sunlight. Light tropical mist during the day and denser fog at dusk provide optimal moisture levels, enhancing cherry maturation, intensifying sugars, and enriching the beans’ flavour profile.

The Farm.

José Lutrell, founder of Abu Coffee, transitioned from a successful engineering career to managing the family farm after his father’s passing. He refocused the farm on specialty coffee, branding Abu Coffee as “coffee designers.” Their goal is to create unique coffees through innovative fermentation processes, producing a diverse range of flavours—distinctive yet exceptionally clean and high-quality. The name “Abu” honours José’s father, derived from “Abuelo,” the affectionate name given to him by his grandchildren.

When we discover one of these coffees, our team spends months in our Roastery’s Coffee Lab cupping, tasting and tweaking roast profiles so we can present to you the best possible version of this coffee.

Each Rarities offering is presented in six sealed 20g whole bean doses for optimal preservation, giving you the freshest coffee possible for each brew. We recommend these doses are frozen immediately, the perfect way of storing these exclusive lots and an opportunity to build your own personal rare archive.
