Repeat buying is key to stability in the coffee supply chain and this is a fresh crop of what was one of our first coffees at WatchHouse. Gitega is delicate and tea-like but with intense berry qualities. Natural Rwandans make up a tiny proportion of the country's coffee production, so enjoy something quite unique.
Coffee was effectively a household garden industry in Rwanda making little to no money for smallholders until Dr. Tim Schilling arrived in the early 2000s with a mission to use agriculture for income generating activities. His project was known as PEARL, and through it they discovered the potential of coffee in Rwanda due to the country's favourable quality growing conditions, including the altitude, weather and thousands of hills that create diverse microclimates.
Now we get to enjoy beautifully complex cups like this naturally processed Red Bourbon, with an intensely fruity yet light and delicate flavour profile. It has really gone full circle - before PEARL, Rwanda grew poor quality naturals; then, with the focus on quality came exclusively washed process coffees; and now we can see, albeit rarely, an exceptional natural coffee from Rwanda. Enjoy tasting a little part of a big story.
